KARACHI, PAKISTAN – Five people, including four members of the same family, were killed in two separate road accidents in Karachi on Tuesday, underscoring the city’s alarming rise in fatal traffic incidents involving heavy vehicles.
According to police and rescue officials, the first accident occurred on Hawkesbay Road in the Mauripur area at around 9am, when a speeding car lost control and crashed into a wall near a stormwater drain. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza said the victims were likely returning from Hawkes Bay beach.
The crash claimed the lives of Yousuf, his wife Khalida, and their two daughters — six-year-old Zainab and ten-year-old Ayesha. Six others, all family members, were injured and transported to Civil Hospital Karachi. Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed that three of the injured were in critical condition.
In a separate incident, a collision between a trailer and a truck near the New Sabzi Mandi on the Super Highway resulted in the death of a man and injuries to three others. Rescue officials identified the deceased as 39-year-old Gaya Chand. The injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
These incidents come as Karachi continues to grapple with a surge in road accidents. Data from city hospitals shows that nearly 500 people have died and 4,879 sustained injuries in traffic-related incidents across the city in 2024 alone. A large number of these cases have involved speeding heavy vehicles such as dumpers, water tankers, and trailers.
The recent string of deadly collisions highlights the ongoing crisis on the city’s roads. On June 19, a dumper overturned on a 4×4 vehicle on Rashid Minhas Road, killing a woman and a five-year-old girl. Earlier on June 11, a motorcyclist was killed and his wife injured when an unidentified vehicle struck their bike on the Super Highway. On the same day, two boys lost their lives after being hit by a water tanker near Abdullah College in North Nazimabad.
Authorities say investigations into Tuesday’s accidents are ongoing.
